Commons Machinery is putting digital works into the right context. Information, such as who the creator of an image or a song is, its terms of use, where it was created and when, contribute greatly to the meaning of a work online. But this information is routinely lost, when a work is shared between people or uploaded to social media.

Such information can be retained through all stages of use online with the infrastructure that we are building. Services will then be built on top of that infrastructure, to provide notifications of use, automatic attribution and ease of use of works online. We will also release the entire infrastructure as free and open source software, so that others can build other services on top of it or host their own infrastructure facilitating other or similar services.

Commons Machinery is a development company providing both infrastructure and services, founded in March 2013 and supported in its work by the Shuttleworth Foundation.
